{"id":5229,"date":"2020-01-01T10:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-01T09:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:10009\/?p=5229"},"modified":"2020-01-01T10:00:23","modified_gmt":"2020-01-01T09:00:23","slug":"a-guide-to-skiing-vocab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/blog\/2020\/01\/01\/a-guide-to-skiing-vocab\/","title":{"rendered":"A guide to skiing vocab!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Essential (and less essential) Skiing Vocab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of words which are only ever heard in a ski resort, so if it\u2019s your first time skiing be prepared for some new and strange vocab.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s important to learn the basic terms before navigating a ski resort, there are also some much more nitty gritty words you\u2019ll rarely hear unless you hang around with some pro skiers who live and breath riding.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5232 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/27707763_10160154442190105_2033654188_o.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>But first let\u2019s start with the basics, and the most important terms to know for your ski holiday:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green run \u2013 The easiest run in resort, for first time riders<\/li>\n<li>Blue run \u2013 The next level up, but still quite steady slopes<\/li>\n<li>Red run \u2013 Intermediate level ski run<\/li>\n<li>Black run \u2013 Advanced level ski run<\/li>\n<li>Backcountry \u2013 Non-pisted areas of the slope which doesn\u2019t have avalanche control in place<\/li>\n<li>Cable Car \u2013 Enclosed ski lift, also known as a bubble lift<\/li>\n<li>Cross-country Skiing \u2013 A type of Nordic skiing where a rider uses narrow skis which have heel releases<\/li>\n<li>Gondola \u2013 Similar to a cable car but usually smaller<\/li>\n<li>Magic Carpet \u2013 A conveyor-belt style ski lift typically found on bunny slopes<\/li>\n<li>Avalanche \u2013 When loose snow falls down the mountain, gathering other snow on its way. These can be lethal if you are caught by one<\/li>\n<li>Off-piste \u2013 Non-pisted, backcountry parts of the mountain<\/li>\n<li>Snow park \u2013 A roped off freestyle zone filled with jumps, rails, fun boxes, and other assorted obstacles<\/li>\n<li>Drag Lift\/pommel &#8211; A type of ski lift which drags you up the mountain while you are on your skis or board<\/li>\n<li>T-bar lift \u2013 Like a drag lift, but with a T-bar shaped arm suspension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And here are some less essential but still quite common skiing terms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5233 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/Chardons-162.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<li>All-mountain skis \u2013 Skis designed to work in all conditions<\/li>\n<li>Alpine Ski \u2013 Downhill skiing, the opposite of Nordic skiing<\/li>\n<li>Avalanche Beacon\/Transceiver \u2013 Avalanche equipment worn by a skier or border. If the individual is caught in an avalanche, it sends out a signal out so that rescuers can locate them<\/li>\n<li>Avalanche Control \u2013 Triggering avalanches through artificial means<\/li>\n<li>Baseplate\/Binding Plate \u2013 The bottom section of a ski or board binding<\/li>\n<li>Basket \u2013 The round or starshaped part at the bottom of ski poles which prevents the poles going too deep in the snow<\/li>\n<li>Binding \u2013 The part that connects the boot to the board or skis<\/li>\n<li>Boot Board &#8211; The platform inside a boot shell that the liner sits on top of<\/li>\n<li>Bowl \u2013 Large mountain basin popular among skiers for doing long sweeping turns<\/li>\n<li>Bumps\/Mogels \u2013 Bumpy parts of a slope which make for trickier skiing<\/li>\n<li>Camber \u2013 Upward curvature on base of board or skis<\/li>\n<li>Cant &#8211; The lateral angle of the boot in relation to the ski or snowboard<\/li>\n<li>Carving \u2013 Turning technique using the edge of skis or snowboard to reduce slowing down<\/li>\n<li>Carving skis \u2013 Narrower skis designed for carving<\/li>\n<li>Cat Tracks \u2013 Relatively flat paths created by the Snowcats<\/li>\n<li>Chatter \u2013 Vibration of skis or board caused by riding at high speeds<\/li>\n<li>Cirque \u2013 similar to a bowl, but steeper<\/li>\n<li>Cornice \u2013 an overhang of snow caused by constant wind. These are broken during avalanche control<\/li>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5234 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920-1024x662.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920-768x497.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920-1536x994.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/freerider-498473_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<li>Couloir \u2013 A gorge or gully on the side of the mountain, often skied down by off-piste skiers<\/li>\n<li>Crevasse \u2013 A deep and often hidden crack in a glacier or permafrost<\/li>\n<li>Dampening \u2013 A tool used to reduce chatter<\/li>\n<li>DIN Settings \u2013 The amount of tension needed on a binding to release the skis in a crash<\/li>\n<li>Edge \u2013 Sharpened metal strip on side of skis or snowboard designed to make better turns<\/li>\n<li>Effective Edge \u2013 The length of the edge that is in contact with the snow<\/li>\n<li>Fall Line \u2013 The most direct route down a slope<\/li>\n<li>First tracks \u2013 First marks made in fresh snow<\/li>\n<li>Flex \u2013 The stiffness of the outer shell of a ski boot<\/li>\n<li>Footbed \u2013 Removable sole in a ski boot<\/li>\n<li>Freestyle \u2013 A type of skiing focused on tricks<\/li>\n<li>Frozen Granular \u2013 Old snow that has been frozen together<\/li>\n<li>Grab \u2013 Holding on to any part of your skis or board while in the air<\/li>\n<li>Granula surface \u2013 A surface of snow which has been very packed down<\/li>\n<li>Grooming \u2013 The most common form of trail grooming<\/li>\n<li>Halfpipe &#8211; A U-shaped channel with smooth walls used by freestyle skiers and snowboarders to do aerial tricks<\/li>\n<li>Heliskiing \u2013 An advanced form of skiing which involves a helicopter dropping the skier on to a very difficult part of the mountain. Illegal in France but is still done in other places<\/li>\n<p> \t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/summer-skiing320-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/summer-skiing320-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/summer-skiing320.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<li>Indy Grab \u2013 Grabbing in between your board bindings when jumping, otherwise known as a safety grab on skis<\/li>\n<li>Method Grab \u2013 Front hand grabs the back of the snowboard<\/li>\n<li>Jib \u2013 Riding across anything that isn\u2019t snow<\/li>\n<li>Kicker \u2013 A triangular wedge shaped jump<\/li>\n<li>Liner \u2013 The soft inner part of a boot<\/li>\n<li>Micro-fleece \u2013 An improved form of fleece with a tighter, less dense knit<\/li>\n<li>Monoski \u2013 A single ski with both boots attached<\/li>\n<li>Mute Grab &#8211; Grabbing the toe edge of your snowboard between the bindings with your front hand<\/li>\n<li>Packed Powder \u2013 Relatively new snow which has been flattened<\/li>\n<li>Pit Zips \u2013 Zips under your armpits for ventilation<\/li>\n<li>Pole Grip \u2013 The handle on a ski pole<\/li>\n<li>Powder Skis \u2013 Skis designed to float atop powder<\/li>\n<li>Power Strip \u2013 The strap on top of a ski boot<\/li>\n<li>Quarterpipe &#8211; A halfpipe divided in half lengthways and used for a single, often massive, aerial trick<\/li>\n<li>Racer Skis \u2013 Typically longer, thinner, and stiffer skis designed for racing<\/li>\n<li>Racing Boot \u2013 Typically narrower and stiffer boots designed for racing<\/li>\n<li>Rail \u2013 A bar, typically metal, used by freestylers to slide across<\/li>\n<li>Reverse Camber \u2013 The downward arc created in skis or a board made by the pressure from the rider\u2019s weight<\/li>\n<li>Schussing\/ Straight-lining \u2013 Skiing straight downhill without turning<\/li>\n<li>Shell \u2013 The hard outer plastic part of the ski boot<\/li>\n<li>Shovel \u2013 The front end of a ski which bows up to avoid sinking into the snow<\/li>\n<li>Sidecut \u2013 The inner curvature of a ski or snowboard<\/li>\n<li>Ski Boards\/Snowblades \u2013 Extremely short skis<\/li>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5236 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AND5746-Modifier\u00a9andyparant2-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/AND5746-Modifier\u00a9andyparant2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/AND5746-Modifier\u00a9andyparant2-1024x684.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/AND5746-Modifier\u00a9andyparant2-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/www.chaletchardons.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/AND5746-Modifier\u00a9andyparant2.png 1155w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<li>Ski Brake \u2013 An attachment for ski bindings designed to stop a ski from shooting downhill after detaching<\/li>\n<li>Ski Patrol \u2013 Skiers and boarders responsible for slope safety<\/li>\n<li>Ski-in Ski-out \u2013 Accommodation which can be skied up to and straight out of<\/li>\n<li>Skins &#8211; Strips of material that can be temporarily attached to the bottom of skis, used for climbing up hills<\/li>\n<li>Snowcat \u2013 A tracked vehicle used for moving around snowy, mountainous areas. Also used to groom runs<\/li>\n<li>Snowplough \u2013 A beginners technique for slowing down on skis, by turning the tips of each ski in to each other to make an upside down V<\/li>\n<li>Snowskate \u2013 A skate board without wheels used on snow<\/li>\n<li>Superpipe &#8211; A larger version of a regular halfpipe<\/li>\n<li>Tail \u2013 The backend of a ski<\/li>\n<li>Telemark Skiing \u2013 A mix between alpine and cross-country skiing which uses detaching heel binders to allow for traversing, but also has wide enough skis to handle high speeds and sharp turns<\/li>\n<li>Transitions &#8211; The section of a halfpipe linking the vertical walls to the flat floor<\/li>\n<li>Traverse \u2013 Skiing across a slope in a zig-zag pattern<\/li>\n<li>Tree Line \u2013 The altitude at which trees stop growing on the mountain<\/li>\n<li>Twin Tip \u2013 Skis where both the tail and the tip are curved upwards, allowing for backwards skiing<\/li>\n<li>Vertical Drop \u2013 The distance between the base of the mountain and its tallest point<\/li>\n<li>Wax \u2013 Used on skis or a board to keep them gliding smoothly<\/li>\n<li>Waxless Skis \u2013 A type of cross country skis with a crosshatch or fish scale pattern on the base which means it has no need to be waxed<\/li>\n<li>White Out \u2013 When visibility is so poor you basically can\u2019t see anything<\/li>\n<li>Wind Packed \u2013 Snow which has been flattened by the wind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Essential (and less essential) Skiing Vocab There are lots of words which are only ever heard in a ski resort, so if it\u2019s your first time skiing be prepared for some new and strange vocab.
